The program exposes students to various roles in construction across the field and in the office, providing diverse experiences from working on a project site to performing cost estimates in one of our offices. Interns take an OSHA Ten-Hour Safety course, learn CPR and First Aid, and participate in Learning & Development and Wellness activities. There is also time for fun: Jobsite hard-hat tours, team lunches, and an Intern Team Challenge that may include a scavenger hunt, obstacle course, field day, and other team-bonding activities.
Those who excel their first year often return, taking on increasing levels of responsibility in their second, third, or fourth years. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of how to succeed in the construction industry. We gain some of our most valuable team members.

As the company’s first intern in 1995, I can personally attest to the success of this program. I interned with W. M. Jordan Company every summer while studying Construction Management at Virginia Tech. I had the opportunity to work on a job site in the field, learned estimating in the office, and developed my project management skills under the guidance of some of the best mentors in the business. I joined W. M. Jordan Company full-time immediately after graduating, and I’ve never looked back. Today, I am privileged and honored to lead a team of construction professionals in our Carolinas Division.

As an Economics and Business major from VMI, I knew little to nothing about construction. In fact, I thought blueprints were still blue! The internship program allowed me to learn, by working side by side with leading professionals in the field, as much as possible about the construction industry. I still lean on things I learned as an intern to this day. My internship laid the foundation for me to earn a full-time position with the company, and I now manage multiple projects out of our Newport News office.
