OVERVIEW

The Blacksburg Public Safety Building is a state-of-the-art public safety complex located in the heart of downtown Blacksburg, Virginia. This two-story facility wraps a 6-level parking garage offering a needed additional 338 spaces to the busy downtown corridor.

The new 35,050 square foot structure supports the police force featuring a plethora of amenities such as a classrooms, training rooms, simulated fire arms training facilities, a defensive tactics room, and an exercise room, as well as a large break-room with scenic outdoor patio space. Positioned near the Virginia Tech campus, the station serves Blacksburg residents and offers a large community room for use by citizens of Blacksburg. While the majority of the parking garage is for public use, the lower level exclusively holds police vehicles and offers two entry points for security. The structure provides a new standard of safety to the town of Blacksburg, assisting in recruiting efforts, as well as bolstering training for veterans of the department.

W. M. Jordan Real Estate Development was awarded the project through a PPEA (Public-Private Partnership Act) proposal. The contract is a comprehensive agreement, including the design, construction, furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the facility. W. M. Jordan Real Estate Development awarded W. M. Jordan Company with a lump sum construction contract. This project required the submittal of a conditional use permit request, which allowed for the parking garage to exceed a 60-foot height restriction on new buildings in Downtown Blacksburg. In keeping with green initiatives Blacksburg has set forth, the building is LEED v. 4 Silver Certified. This certification includes the use of energy efficient lighting, plumbing and mechanical systems and a solar ready design, as well as vehicle charging stations in the garage.
