The Unaccompanied Housing Building 530 at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Beach was originally built in July 1958. Needing to update the facility, W. M. Jordan Company worked with NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic to deconstruct and rebuild the 3-story, 63,268 square foot barracks. The project began with deconstructing the existing building, maintaining only its structural elements – the original steel columns, concrete lift slabs and cast-in-place concrete walls for stair towers and elevator hoist way. Utilizing the original ‘bones’ of the barracks, W. M. Jordan Company added all new framing, insulation, roofing, windows, doors, MEP systems, fire suppression systems, and interior finishes.
The new barracks include 260 beds in 132 units; the typical room is a double occupancy unit with one shared bathroom, plus four ABA units. There is a common kitchen on the first floor, along with a multi-purpose room. Each floor contains laundry facilities and a shared storage room. The building was designed and built in accordance with the Guiding Principles for Sustainable Federal Buildings.
