OVERVIEW

W. M. Jordan Company provided CM at Risk services for the New Sciences Building at Old Dominion University. The 110,500 sf, multi-story building replaced the existing Alfred Chemistry Building and houses laboratories, faculty offices, and departmental administrative and technical support space of the College of Sciences.

New areas include undergrad teaching labs, research labs and shared research support facilities for the department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biology. The facility also includes a new, state of the art planetarium, replacing Pretlow Planetarium.

The building is designed for students to go to class, attend tutoring and active learning sessions, meet with faculty and go to labs without having to walk more than few steps.

First-year students can attend class, go to labs, consult with faculty members and receive tutoring all on the first floor, and all within view of each other. There is a similar  setup on the second floor, which primarily holds classes and labs for sophomores. Juniors and seniors participate in research with graduate students and faculty on the upper floors.

Much of the first two floors, including labs, are visible from the outside through a large swath of glass.

This project has received an Engineering News Record Mid-Atlantic Region Award of Merit in the Higher Education/Research Category. It has also received multiple ABC Virginia  Excellence in Construction Awards Including:  The Higher Education Award, Allegiance Award and Project Involving the most ABC Members Award.
