A collaborative vision of the City of Newport News, W. M. Jordan Company, Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, and Jefferson Labs, Tech Center is a 100-acre development featuring diverse retail and dining, apartments, and a world class research park. Developed and constructed by W. M. Jordan, Tech Center sits on one of the busiest intersections in the region, offering high visibility on prime real estate. The vision began 30 years ago, when the City determined that it would be beneficial to have a research park next to Jefferson Labs, one of the seventeen U.S. Department of Energy National Accelerator Facilities. This vision became a reality when W. M. Jordan took a plan to the city to create the first phase of the development, Marketplace at Tech Center, an open-air restaurant and shopping space, anchored by international retailers.
Development of the Tech Center has occurred in 3 phases, with Phase I, Marketplace at Tech Center completed in 2015, Phase II, Venture Apartments [iN] Tech Center completed in 2017, and Phase III, the ongoing development of Tech Center Research Park. The project is expected to create an estimated:
- 6,000 permanent jobs
- An annual impact of $810.5 million in additional economic output in the city
- $28.3 million in additional state and local tax revenue annually
The first phase, Marketplace at Tech Center, offers 250,000 square feet of diverse dining and retail options. Anchored by international grocery retailer Whole Foods, Marketplace boasts premier dining and shopping options, with nationally recognized brands such as P.F. Chang’s, Ulta, and Starbucks. Marketplace is located within walking distance to Venture Apartments, Tech Center’s luxury high end apartment complex, and Tech Center Research Park.
Venture Apartments [iN] Tech Center sets the new standard of living in Newport News. Offering tenants enviable shared amenities such as a spa-like pool, dog washing station, and media room, each apartment is fortified with the latest smart technology, equipping each unit with Schlage Control Locks, Nest Thermostat, and Comelit Access System. Steps away from Marketplace, walking distance to the OneLife Wellness Center, and across the street from Tech Center Research Park, residents can work, play, and innovate moments from their home.
Tech Center Research Park is the heart of this development and is the last piece to fully bring the original vision to life. With 10 planned buildings, the research park will serve as a campus of collaboration and innovation, bringing people together with large open space, walkable trails, and outdoor seating. Completed in 2019, Building 700 offers collaborators a co-working space, shared conference room space, and two-story open-air lobby perfect for networking and events. Building 800offers 80,000 square feet of Class A office space.
Tech Center brings Newport News a modern development, drawing on the needs of tomorrow. With an increasing number of cities participating in the live, work, play lifestyle, Tech Center elevates itself above the rest, offering residents the opportunity to live, work, and innovate. Directly affiliated with Jefferson Labs and NASA, Tech Center offers something no other research park can: the opportunity to innovate alongside the brightest minds in the region.
