OVERVIEW

W.M. Jordan Company and Clark Nexsen Architecture and Engineering provided Design-Build services to replace aging student housing on the University of Virginia’s grounds in Charlottesville, Virginia. The project involved removing existing residence halls that were built in the 1960s, then building modern housing with sustainable features and amenities such as gathering spaces that foster intimate, secure and close-knit communities. The buildings are designed and constructed with sustainability in mind, to USGBC LEED® Silver standards.

Phased construction of five residence halls containing 1,038 beds took place over several years, while adjacent buildings remained occupied. The team used Building Information Modeling to first build in a virtual environment, working out potential space conflicts and providing a basis for pre-fabrication of building components.

This project received a Design Build Honor Award in 2014 from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Mid-Atlantic Region, and a Safety Award of Merit in 2014 from Engineering News Record (ENR) Mid-Atlantic Region.
