OVERVIEW

The Grace and Broad Residence Center offers a Living-Learning Community for 396 students. Two 5-story buildings, each facing a different street with a unique architectural character, make up the complex. The complex is home to two living-learning communities designed to develop leaders and entrepreneurs. The Design-Build team worked with the university to repurpose the entire first floor of the Broad Street building into retail and Collaborative Incubator space to support these programs.

Four-person single bedroom apartments with large, oversized windows reflect the character of an urban loft apartment. Each furnished apartment has a full-size kitchen with appliances including a washer and dryer. The buildings are air-conditioned and include wifi, cable TV and 24-hour security. The project is registered with the USGBC, seeking LEED® Silver certification for sustainable design and construction.

The project was awarded a 2015 Merit Award from the DBIA Hampton Roads Chapter for excellence in Design-Build project delivery. Student Housing Business Magazine awarded the project an Innovator Award for best on-campus architecture and design during their InterFace Student Housing Conference in April 2016.
