OVERVIEW

The VCUHS Critical Care Hospital is a fifteen-story tower attached to the north side of Main Hospital at VCU’s Medical College of Virginia campus. With 232 beds, the tower includes seven Acute Care and Intensive Care Units, critical care patient beds, an expanded Surgery Department with a ten-operating room suite, and shell space for the future expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department and Central Sterile Supply. Specialized functions include a Security Care Unit for the Department of Corrections, a 40-crib Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a 16-bed Burn Unit. The project won a 2012 Vista Award, presented by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association. This award recognizes the importance of teamwork in creating an optimal health care physical environment. Collaboration and communication with everyone involved helped the team build this hospital under budget and ahead of schedule.
