OVERVIEW

W. M. Jordan Company provided Design Build services to Virginia Tech for their Creativity & Innovation District (CID) LLC Residence Hall that houses upperclassmen, freshmen, student athletes and some faculty members. The $85.2 million residence hall is a six-story, living learning community with 598 beds and academic support spaces including classrooms, an auditorium, library, art studios, laundry facilities metal, wood and welding shops and roof top green spaces. The resident rooms are a mix of single, double and suite style dorm rooms, each have their own vertical fan coil unit for heating and air conditioning. In addition, the new residence hall ties into the town community with a theater and performance hall.

The 230,896 square foot facility is constructed of structural steel frame with CMU masonry block, a curtainwall, metal panels, Hokie Stone exterior façade and overhead coiling doors.  This project has been designed for and is seeking LEED Silver certification including a green roof.

The CID residence hall offers housing for approximately 600 students and a wide variety of academic, social, research, and collaboration spaces. The residence hall is intended for students enmeshed in the CID and designed around three living-learning communities (LLCs) for the arts and entrepreneurship — while also weaving in housing for varsity student-athletes.

Visual openness, intentional pedestrian connections, and a variety of landscape spaces connect the building and landscape to the larger CID district and its anticipated CID Green. The building’s massing and architecture embeds the building’s character firmly within the recognizable language unique to the Virginia Tech campus.

This project received The Design-Build Institute of America (Mid-Atlantic Region) top honors, the 2020 Project of the year and Excellence in Architecture awards. It was also received the Design Innovator award from Interface Student Housing.
