Easton Bowman, a rising junior at Christopher Newport University majoring in Electrical Engineering, is spending his first summer at W. M. Jordan as a Safety Operations Intern and is already making a strong impression.
Easton chose his major to keep his career options open and gain experience in both field and office roles. His internship has provided just that, giving him a well-rounded view of the construction industry and allowing him to embrace every learning opportunity.
This summer, Easton visits job sites in Richmond and Williamsburg, Virginia, assisting with safety inspections to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and W. M. Jordan’s industry-leading safety standards. While working alongside experienced safety professionals, he helps document project progress through photos and detailed written reports and addresses any safety concerns on site.
“While my third-grade safety patrol days might not officially count,” Easton joked, “they did spark an early interest in responsibility”.
Eager for real-world experience, Easton connected with W. M. Jordan’s Employee Engagement Manager, Sydney Galoozis, and Human Resources Coordinator, Libby Knowles, through a former intern. Open to any opportunity at W. M. Jordan, he found the perfect fit as a Safety intern.
Mentorship has been a pivotal aspect of Easton’s experience. He collaborates closely with W. M. Jordan’s Richmond Safety Manager, Anthony Pemberton, his direct mentor. Anthony, who joined W. M. Jordan within the past year following a distinguished safety career in the United States Military, brings years of extensive tactical safety expertise to the role. His guidance has been instrumental in helping Easton learn the ropes.
Together, Easton and Anthony are immersing themselves in W. M. Jordan’s safety culture, creating a collaborative environment where Easton’s contributions are recognized and encouraged, boosting his confidence.
“We have been able to travel to multiple job sites together and tackle challenges as a team,” Easton said.
Easton admires John Nichols, W. M. Jordan’s Director of Safety, for his deep industry knowledge and approachable nature.
“John has been incredibly supportive this summer,” Easton shared. “He’s always available for guidance and has helped me understand the bigger picture of what we do and what W. M. Jordan stands for”.
So far this summer, Easton has earned several certifications including OSHA 10, OSHA 30, and CPR & First Aid Training, and participated in trenching, excavation, and asbestos training sessions.
Beyond these technical skills, Easton has also learned the significant importance of building relationships.
“I’ve realized that safety is not just about rules, it is about people,” Easton said. “When you build relationships, it’s easier to have productive conversations and resolve issues respectfully and effectively”.
His story is a great example of how curiosity, openness to learn, and strong work ethic can turn a summer internship into a meaningful step toward a successful career. We are excited to see how Easton continues to grow and contribute as he builds a promising career in the construction industry.
