2026 Intern Spotlight: Calvin Lewis

This week, we’re highlighting Calvin Lewis, a second-year intern at W. M. Jordan. Calvin earned an associate degree in Agricultural Technology from Virginia Tech before completing his bachelor’s degree at Radford University, where he studied Marketing.

Although Calvin didn’t pursue a degree in construction, he’s no stranger to the industry. With his father as a project manager for a local firm, and summer jobs working on framing and drywall projects, construction is something that has always been a part of Calvin’s background.  

Over the course of two summers with W. M. Jordan, Calvin has had the opportunity to see the business from multiple perspectives. His first summer was spent in the estimating department at the Richmond office, where he worked alongside Project Estimator, Zach Sprinkle. 

“The estimating background gave me a strong understanding of cost planning and what it really means to be a construction professional,” Calvin shared.  

His experience there helped him develop a deeper appreciation for the planning and coordination that happens long before a project begins. 

While estimating gave him valuable industry knowledge, Calvin was eager to move into a more hands-on role and experience construction in the field. This summer Calvin is working on two Bank of America projects: a Boiler Replacement in Richmond, Virginia, and a Chiller Replacement in Sandston, Virginia. On site, Calvin’s role includes working with our trade partners, assisting with safety reports, and coordinating with Project Manager, Calum Newcomb. Through this exposure, he’s been able to see what it takes to make a project come to fruition.   

“I wanted the opportunity to plan and see projects come to life, and also be more involved in the execution,” he said. “I like seeing things built from the ground up—when people are depending on you to get the job done, you step up and make it happen.” 

Calvin also credits much of his growth to the people around him, both in the office and on site. He shared that everyone in the estimating department played a key role in his development, and that Project Superintendents, Cater Neal, Josh Rivas, and Owen Hyder have been especially helpful mentors during his time on site this summer. 

The opportunity to gain experience in both estimating and field operations has given Calvin a greater appreciation for everything that goes into bringing these projects to life. 

Looking ahead, he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in construction management and hopes to return to W. M. Jordan in the future, continuing to build on what he’s learned over the past two summers.  

When asked what advice he would give to future interns, Calvin answered: 

“It never hurts to apply. I didn’t have a construction degree, and I still had the opportunity to join the team. I’d recommend reaching out to someone at the company or connecting with the team at a career fair. Putting a face to your name is a great way to stand out.”
