W. M. Jordan Company continues our coverage of the 25th Annual Women in Construction Week with a spotlight on Senior Executive Assistant Holli Wilson. Holli has been with W. M. Jordan for 18 years, and in that time has seen and experienced a lot of growth and change in the construction industry. We asked Holli to give us some insight on what she has learned in her time working for W. M. Jordan Company. Check out her answers below!

What do you love about working in the construction industry?

  • The people.  In my 18 years here, I’ve been surrounded by the most genuinely kind colleagues who have become like family.  They are eager to share their knowledge and grow the next generation.

What are some of the biggest things you have learned since joining W. M. Jordan Company?

  • Kindness and hard work persevere.  Malcolm Gladwell said in his book, Outliers, a key to success in life is opportunity and what you do with it.  I feel like that encompasses my journey here at W. M. Jordan.  Always being open to new opportunities and doing my best to continue to move the company forward.

How have you seen the role of women in construction change since you have started in the industry? 

  • I’ve been energized over my time here to see female colleagues in a support role grow into managing multi-million-dollar projects, become department managers, directors, and our first woman vice president.  I see more and more women ‘at the table,’ deservingly so.  Your work ethic is recognized and rewarded.  Beyond the growth, we are heard and validated and that is the most important thing.

What has kept you at W. M. Jordan for so long?

  • Our people, our commitment to giving back to our communities, our work hard, play hard mentality (epic Christmas party and our Fun committee!), and the many times I’ve seen W. M. Jordan show loyalty and support to their employees.  In our best times, I’ve seen valuable feedback given regarding improvements and action taken.  I appreciate being heard, feeling valued, and the mutual balance of taking care of one another.

What advice do you have for someone who is looking to start a career in the construction industry?

  • Look at the company. Take note of their culture and values and begin your career with one whose culture and mission align with your career goals and your personal values.  I enjoy coming to work at W. M. Jordan every day. I really believe it is important to choose a place you can have fun, grow, and develop your professional life.
